The rapid development of the plastic industry has also brought a series of problems caused by waste plastics. The application of plastic products has penetrated into every corner of our daily life. From industrial production to clothing, food, housing and transportation, plastic products are everywhere. People are beginning to notice that plastic waste has seriously effect on our health and living environment. The non-decaying and non-decomposable plastics cannot be effectively recovered. The rapid increase of plastic waste and the related problems caused by it are the challenges for us around the world.
The SPI Resin Identification Coding System (“SPI Symbols”) was introduced to identify the resin type that the plastic items were made from, it helps to make sorting and recycling plastic products easier for recyclers around the world. Each plastic container has a number at the bottom to help us understand its material (a triangle with an arrow and a number inside the triangle).

The seven types of plastic include:
- Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET)
PET is commonly used in: water bottles, carbonated beverage bottles, salad dressing bottle, peanut butter jars, etc.
- High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
HDPE is commonly used in: packaging of cleaning products and bath products, grocery bags, juice containers, toys, etc.
- Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
PVC is commonly used in: raincoats, building materials, plastic films, plastic boxes, plumbing pipes, shoes etc. It is rarely used for food packaging.
- Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
LDPE is commonly used in: plastic wrap, plastic film, frozen food bags, etc.
- Polypropylene (PP)
PP is commonly used in: milk bottles, yogurt bottles, juice containers, microwave meal boxes, disposable cups and plates, etc.
- Polystyrene or Styrofoam (PS)
PS is often used in: instant noodle boxes and fast food boxes.
- Other plastics, including acrylic, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, fiberglass, nylon, polycarbonate, and polylactic acid
Drinking cups, feeding bottles, plastic CDs, medical storage containers, etc.
